SEASON 9 - LESSONS 1-18
WEEKLY LESSONS
WEEK 1: GREAT EXPECTATIONS
For great expectations to build you up and bring out the best in you, they must come from a place of love, passion, and want-to. If you're trying to live up to great expectations that you aren't passionate about or don't want, then they will just become pressure that weighs you down. Pressure leads to burnout, but great expectations encourage you to show up and give your best day after day.
Pillar: Personal Code
Key Topics:
expectations, higher standards, set the example, passion, want-to, agency, you choose, positive pressure, encouragement, motivation, confidence, belief, character, self-awareness, personal code
WEEK 2: HAVE FUN
Having fun does not prevent you from winning, and having fun is not a consolation prize for losing. In fact, the things that lead you to win are the things that make playing sports the most fun. The more that you improve each day, compete with teammates and opponents, and build meaningful relationships with your team, the more fun you will have AND the more that you will win.
Pillar: Growth Mindset
Key Topics: fun work, hard work, effort, improvement, building relationships, competition, perspective, growth mindset, consistency, self-management, how to win

WEEK 3: WHOLE TRUTH
Do you want to LOOK like you're going to reach your goals, or do you want to actually REACH them? To reach your goals and dreams, you must be willing to hear and speak the whole truth. It's easy to tell half-truths or versions of the truth that leave out the bits you don't like. But if you can't look at the whole truth, even when it's hard, then it’s always going to look like success is on the way without ever being in reach.
Pillar: Goals
Key Topic: truth-teller, coachability, trust, hard truths, success, honesty, integrity, accountability, goals, self-management

WEEK 4: BOUNCE BACK
When you get knocked down, how you get up matters. If you bounce back angry about falling, or if you bounce back ready to make the same mistake again, then getting knocked down did not benefit you. To find success after a fall, you have to bounce back BETTER than before. That means you get up smarter, stronger, and more grateful.
Pillar: Grit
Key Topic: grit, attitude, responsible decision-making, knocked down, get up, improvement, learning from mistakes, failure, resilience, toughness, tenacity, thankful, gratitude

WEEK 5: GOOD ENOUGH
How do you know if your work is good enough? You start by breaking that into two smaller questions: What is good? and What is enough? Good work requires preparation, coachability, and effort. The way to know if you've done enough good work is to measure your progress. When you measure how you have prepared well, received coaching, and given great effort, then you can be confident that your work is good enough.
Pillar: Growth Mindset
Key Topics: growth mindset, self-awareness, confidence, coachability, preparation, effort, discipline, measure progress, improvement, hard work, learning

WEEK 6: EMBRACE DISCIPLINE
The way that you motivate yourself when you don't feel like it or don't want to is to embrace discipline. Discipline helps you to say No in service of a greater Yes. Discipline helps you to do what you must today so you can get what you want tomorrow. When you embrace discipline, you align your work with your goals, and then you get it done.
Pillar: Work Ethic
Key Topics: work ethic, discipline, self-management, motivation, effort, commitment, accountability, self-respect, procrastination, want-to

WEEK 7: HOKEY POKEY
The hokey pokey is a fun dance from childhood. But when hokey pokey can be used to describe your commitment, your hard work, or your effort, then it’s not so fun anymore. We all know people who put in their commitment and then when it costs more than they thought it would, they take it out again. Don’t be a hokey pokey.
Pillar: Personal Code
Key Topics: teamwork, personal code, holding back, withholding, honesty, commitment, hard work, effort, your best, social awareness, character, count the cost, sacrifice, call out

WEEK 8: TIMING MATTERS
How you spend your time matters. What you do and when you do it impacts your personal success and the success of your team. They say the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, but the next best time is today. That's because growth takes time. If you want to grow to be the best you can be, then you should start today.
Pillar: Servant Leadership
Key Topics: hard conversations, bad day, call out teammates, teamwork, servant leadership, communication, social awareness, bounce back, right time, go first, hard work, procrastination

WEEK 9: BETTER CHOICES
Where you direct your attention has a huge impact on the daily choices you make and the goals that you do (or don't) reach. In other words, where you focus, you finish. If you don't care where your focus and attention goes, then your choices will lead you away from your goals, instead of leading you towards them. If you want better results for your life, then you have to start making better choices.
Pillar: Goals
Key Topics: focus, attention, influence, impact, self-management, goals, accountability, choices, responsibility, responsible decision-making, time, well spent

WEEK 10: KEEP GOING
The key to getting past that urge to give up, no matter when or where it happens, is just to keep going. If you keep going, you will get past being a beginner. If you keep going when you hit an obstacle, you will go through, around, or over that obstacle. If you keep going when you've found success, then you will continue to be successful. You will get through whatever adversity you are facing, but only if you keep going.
Pillar: Grit
Key Topics: carry on, perseverance, persistance, grit, self-management, success, adversity, challenges, overcoming obstacles, beginner, tenacity, embarrassment, toughness, motivation, learning, pride

WEEK 11: GET RIGHT
Things will go wrong in sports and in life. And when they do, you get to choose to either let things stay wrong (and probably get worse) or to figure out how to get right. It's hard to choose to get right. But, in that struggle and hardship, you find the strength to overcome not only the challenge right in front of you, but also the ones to come in the future.
Pillar: Grit
Key Topics: perspective, attitude, mentality, reset button, grit, growth mindset, self-management, bad day, mistakes, doubts, tenacity, coachability, preparation, take action

WEEK 12: CHEAT CODE
There's no shortcut for success, but there is a cheat code. That cheat code is: Love. It's not really cheating to love what you do or to love your teammates, but love amplifies everything else you do to such a degree that it looks like cheating. Love changes what you do and how you do it.
Pillar: Servant Leadership
Key Topics: go first, love, servant leadership, relationships skills, commitment, belief, perseverance, teamwork, friendship, mudita, we before me

WEEK 13: BETTER TOGETHER
There’s a saying: If you want to run fast, run alone, but if you want to run far, run together. You can be good on your own, but to be great, you need a team. You and your teammates are better together than any of you can be alone. The best teams know: No matter how great you are or I am, we will always be better together.
Pillar: Personal Code
Key Topics: teamwork, relationship skills, personal code, friendship, team building, unity, encouragement, leadership, trust, we before me

WEEK 14: WHY NOT
You can probably come up with all sorts of excuses for why you should not or cannot be a leader. It's easy to ask: Why Me? But to make the impact that only YOU can make, you instead need to ask: Why Not? The mental shift from Why Me? to Why Not? helps you look for the reasons why you ARE cut out to be a leader. The more you look for reasons why you can lead, the more that you will find them
Pillar: Servant Leadership
Key Topics: social awareness, service, servant leadership, set the example, go first, and lead, purpose, motivation, lead anyway, building relationships

WEEK 15: LAST SET, BEST SET
Last Set, Best Set is a mentality that says "I will give everything I have to what is right in front of me." It's not about saving energy for the last rep or the last drill during training, and it's not about saving effort for the last quarter or the game-deciding shot. It's about how you do everything that you do. When you think "Last Set, Best Set," you set yourself up for more confidence, greater coachability, and better preparation.
Pillar: Goals
Key Topics: be here, present moment, goals, self-awareness, consistency, effort, energy, your best, preparation, confidence, coachability, learning from mistakes, no excuses, finish strong, focus forward

WEEK 16: ZOOM OUT
Sometimes, you'll get so zoomed in on a bad day or self-doubt that it starts to feel like the negatives are all you have. But the truth is: A bad day only has staying power if you stay zoomed in. Staying zoomed in on the problem gives long-term power to a short-term circumstance. But, if you zoom out, you can see the bigger picture. This wider view puts bad days and self-doubt into perspective, and that brings hope that things will get better.
Pillar: Growth Mindset
Key Topics: growth mindset, perspective, self-management, bigger picture, bad day, self-doubt, confidence, hope, trust the process, overcoming adversity, today's work, let go

WEEK 17: LISTEN UP
You are surrounded by opportunities to learn and get better. But, too often, the lessons that your coaches, teammates, and mistakes try to teach you end up going in one ear and out the other. When you're mentally checked out or distracted, you're not going to learn as well as you would being fully present and focused. That's why it's so important that you learn to listen up with your eyes, ears, and shoulders.
Pillar: Grit
Key Topics: responsible decision-making, learning from mistakes, grit, head heart hands, coachability, attention, focus, distraction, body language, be here, present moment

WEEK 18: PERFECT PRACTICE
The purpose of practice is to learn all that you can, to build trust with your teammates, and to build confidence in yourself. A perfect practice is one that supports all three of these functions. You are in control of whether or not you have a perfect practice. That's because you choose whether or not you give total focus, give total effort, and are totally coachable.
Pillar: Work Ethic
Key Topics: learning from mistakes, failure, coachability, perspective, total effort, focus forward, be here, present, build trust, confidence, choice, responsible decision-making, work ethic, commitment
